The actress we all love to hate was born and bred in  Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal. Her parents died when she was an infant, and her grandmother became her guardian. Her grandmother would struggle to make ends meet, but she made sure her granddaughter Thuso Mbedu had the best education. She wanted her granddaughter to have a better future because back then, they believed that education was the key to success.

To be a trophy granddaughter to her grandma, Thuso worked hard at school so that she could excel in her studies. She did her matric at Pietermaritzburg Girls High school and passed with good grades.

After passing grade 12, she registered for tertiary education at the University of the Witwatersrand, where she studied  Physical Theatre and Performing Arts Management. She underwent four-year training before she graduated with her honours degree in 2013.
