His real name is Mthokozi Khathi, a South African DJ, producer, and entrepreneur. He is a Durban kwaito artist and founder of a record label called Afrotainment. He is best known for introducing artists such as DJ C’ndo, Big Nuz, DJ Fisherman and Qwabe Twins through his record label Afrotainment

He was born on 24th August 1976 in KwaHlabisa, a village in the Northern parts of KwaZulu Natal. He is turning 44 years old later this year. The DJ spent the first three years of his life in KwaHlabisa Village (where he was born) before his family relocated to Durban in 1979. The artist did not always have an interest in being a DJ. In fact, he was studying human resources at the University of Natal when the interest in becoming a DJ overcame him during a time when records were the real deal.

He is married to Gugu Khathi in October 2016. Tira and his wife Gugu Khathi held an Umabo ceremony at his home in KwaHlabisa KZN. Umabo is a traditional Zulu ceremony where a bride gets introduced to her husband’s ancestors in a cow slaughtering ritual and celebration. It normally takes place after the white wedding and it is believed that one is not fully married until after the Umabo ceremony in Zulu culture.

DJ Tira and Gugu Khathi now have three children. Two boys (Junior and Chase) and one daughter (Gigi). His two sons are Junior and Chase Khathi, both have followed in their father’s musical footsteps. Junior is dropping a hip hop single soon and Chase loves spinning the decks. Despite supporting his kids, Mthokozi Khathi still admits that the industry is cruel and that he fears for them, but he can’t stop them from doing what they like.

In 1995 he relocated to Durban from Habisa to study Human Resources at the University of Natal. While studying he developed an interest in DJing and bought his first discs in 1996 and learned how to deejay using records. His passion for Deejay grew and he started playing at varsity parties, weddings, private parties, and popular nightclubs. He was part of the team that formed M1 Entertainment.

In 2000 and 2001 he won the Smirnoff SA DJ Knockout competition. In 2001 he released the Real makoya compilation with the late DJ Khabzela. In 2005 he formed the group Tzozo En Professor together with Kalawa Jazzmen. Together they released 3 composing. Vol1 and Vol2 of Durban’s Finest won 2004 and 2005 Metro FM Best Compilation Awards respectively.

In 2007 Mthokozi Khathi managed to launch his very own recording studio called Afrotainment. His very first artist under the label was DJ Cndo. Since then his path has seen him work as a music producer and sign other artists like Big Nuz. Under his record label, the skillful DJ released a solo project named Ezase Afro Vol: 1. The project features names like Bricks, Joocy of Afrosoul, Daddy, and others. The solo project was a big hit with more than 20,000 copies.
