Black Coffee Biography

Nkosinathi Innocent Mhaphumulo is an award-winning DJ and record producer. He could possibly hold the title of biggest DJ in Africa. Even though he has been in the music industry since 1995, his career launched to international levels through the Red Bull Music Academy in 2003 and is known for his deep, soulful house music compilations.

Being one of the world’s renowned DJs who’s made a name for himself, he does not come cheap. From hosting gigs locally to travelling to places like Milan, DJ Black Coffee seeks to maintain a certain standard about him.  With that said, the DJ just released his booking fee to the public.

Black Coffee Age And Family

Black Coffee is 44 and was born on the 11th of March 1976 in Umlazi in Durban. He later moved to Umtata in the Eastern Cape at the age of 12 after his parent’s divorced.

He grew up listening to his uncle’s reggae collection. In a disastrous turn of events, he lost the use of his left arm at age 14, after he was run down by a taxi. This was believed to be a politically motivated attack in a rally that was celebrating the release of Nelson Mandela.

Black Coffee Education

Black Coffee reverted to Durban to study music theory at what’s now called the Durban University of Technology. He majored in Jazz but didn’t complete his studies as he dropped out to join the group SHANA (Simply Hot and Naturally African).

In 2019 Black Coffee expressed a desire to return to school and pursue his studies in inside design.

Black Coffee Career

Mamphumulo went to Technikon Natal where he studied Jazz Studies. He dropped out of the institution and became a backup singer for Madal Kunene. As a backup singer, he used to work with some of the friends he had made while in Technikon Natal and dropped out of school together with. His friends were Thandukwazi Sikhona popularly known as Demor, and Mnqobi Mdabe, who is commonly known as Shota.

With the experience that they had gained as they worked as backup singers, the trio decided to form their Afro-pop trio, which they called Simply Hot and Naturally African (SANA). Black Coffee was, however, more interested in electronic music production, and so he turned from the group to learn more about music production.

He was lucky enough to be chosen to take part in 2003’s Red Bull Music Academy. The exposure that Black Coffee got while at the academy helped him shoot his first hit, which he named ‘Hapiness’. In 2005, he officially launched his career as a DJ when he did a remix of one of the hits that High Masekela had done in 1972 called Stimela.

This was a big break, and it made him groove on, and later that year, he worked with Soulistic Music to come up with his debut album. The album featured a couple of artists among them were Busi Mhlongo, Hugh Masekela, Thandiswa Mazwai, to mention a few. He recorded this album using very cheap software, under his label, in his office which was also his bedroom. To his highest expectation, the album won him an award during the 2006 MTN SAMA awards.

The following year, he worked on the second album that made him grow his fame even more. His beats were infectious and kept on earning him more fans as time went by. He named his second album ‘Have another one.’ The second album was followed by the third album in 2009 called ‘Home brewed’ and later between 2012 and 2013, he dropped his fourth album called ‘Africa rising.’ In 2015, he worked on and released his fifth album called, ‘Pieces of me.’

To crown his success, Black Coffee (dj) collaborated with David Guetta and Delilah Montagu in 2017. Later that year, he worked on his latest album; Music is king. Black Coffee music is king songs are the most recent project that he has been working on. Music is king is an EP that has six songs. This Black Coffee new album is performing well, according to the views that the songs in the collection have stored on YouTube.

In 2010, Black Coffee got into the Guinness book of records when he DJ for sixty hours without stopping during an event at Maponya Mall.

Black Coffee Marriage And Divorce  

Black Coffee and Mbali Enhle Mlotshwa got engaged in 2010 after three months of dating. The couple tied the knot in a traditional ceremony a year later. They had an exaggerated white wedding in 2017, and later Enhle was praised when she dressed up in her wedding gown for a red-carpet event.

Their marriage was afflicted by scandal, with a mistress coming out in 2013 and Mbali warning women to stay away from her man’s DMs. Earlier in 2019 Black Coffee was rumoured to be in a relationship with David Guetta’s ex-wife Cathy Guetta, but he quickly uncertain the claims. Enhle even posted an Instagram video of her and Cathy having fun together after these rumors surfaced.

By late 2019, Enhle came out asking for privacy as the couple decided to proceed with divorce. The couple, who have travelled the world together, have two sons together. Black Coffee also has two children with his ex-wife.

2019 saw DJ Black Coffee’s marriage with Enhle Maphumulo come to an end, something that many did not see coming. At the time the DJ asked the public if he and his family could be given the privacy they deserved. Now the DJ is finally speaking out on how life has been after his divorce.

In an interview on Insta live with Scoop Makhathini, the DJ shared an engaging story of how he has enjoyed life being a father to his son. As someone who’s always been a winner, he felt he had failed when he divorced Enhle.  The Dj is taking the time to reconsider everything that happened and acknowledge his part in the failure of his marriage.

The DJ was on trip Greece and a twitter exchange between him and former “Love Island” competitor Alexandra Cane definitely sparked some rumors that the two could be together. Apparently, Alexander tweeted a picture of herself and in the caption she tagged the DJ.

He’s built more than a reputation for himself and today he’s become one of the renowned DJs not only locally or regionally, but internationally as well.  Well let’s just start with the wedding that took the world by storm and earned itself a place in the history books. DJ Black Coffee got to play his music at #Somhale’s Union and Somizi just revealed how much they could not afford to have him play at their white wedding

“Then Black Coffee happened…best surprise ever. To get Black Coffee is a dream come true for us. We love him. He was part of our dream list, but hey, $100k… we don’t have it,” he said.

Black Coffee Net Worth

Black Coffee is said to be worth $60 million. He owns a fleet of luxury and flashy cars, including a Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon, a Mercedes CLK and a Maserati. He also owns a jet.
