Connie Chiume (born 5 June 1952 in Welkom) is a multi-award-winning veteran South African actress. She is famous for appearing in many blockbuster movies. She is popular for appearing in feature films like films Black Panther (2018), Blessers (2019), and Black is King (2020).

She has been a familiar face on screen since the ninties for being cast in movies like Warriors from Hell (1990), The Air Up There (1994), The Line (1994), and many others. The actress has also appeared in popular television serials like Gomora, Grassroots, Rhythm City, Zone 14, and many more.

Connie Chiume was born in Welkom, South Africa on 5 June 1952 into the family of Wright Tadeyo Chiume (father) and MaNdlovu (mother).  Her father was from Nkhata Bay, Malawi and her mother hailed from KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

In 1983, Wright Tadeyo died in Malawi. Temweka stayed in Welkom during her early years and there she schooled. After her studies, she practiced as a teacher for a few years, resigned and flew to Israel. In pursuit of an acting profession, she relocated to Greece. In March 2020, Connie’s mother died.

For her matriculation, she relocated to the Eastern Cape. Her interest in being a trained teacher affected her studies in nursing, she did not finish the course. In 1976, Connie graduated in teaching.

Family

In 1985, Connie got married. After about nineteen years of marriage, the union ended in a divorce. She is a proud mother of four children – 2 sons and 2 daughters. Among her relatives is the Malawian politician Ephraim Mganda Chiume (cousin).

The actress is popular for playing the starring role of Mamokete Khuse in the e.tv soap opera Rhythm City.

She played the character who is the upstanding and moral woman who is everyone’s mother for nine years (2007-2016). She has also appeared in many other roles like Stella Moloi in Zone 14 (2005-2010). Her role in the SABC1 drama series earned her an award for the Best Supporting Actress in a Drama at the 2009 SAFTAs.

Other TV credits include the starring role of Martha Ngcobo in the SABC1 drama Soul City. She also took home the Avanti award for Best Actress in a Drama Series in 2000 for the role. She also appeared in the SABC1 sitcom Mazinyo Dot Q as Ma Mavuso-September.

Connie was also cast in the SABC2 drama series 90 Plein Street as Speaker of House. Among other television serials, she was cast is Home Affairs, Khululeka, Yizo Yizo 3, Soul City, and Generations. The actress has also landed acting roles in documentaries, commercials, and education.

Apart from television serials, she has appeared in many feature films like The Air Up There (1994) and Chikin Biznis (1998). In 2000, she appeared in I Dreamed of Africa and appeared in Country of My Skull in 2004. She has also appeared in theatre productions and played the lead role in You Strike The Woman, You Strike The Rock, in 2006.

Connie also performed in Ipi Ntombi, The Little Shop of Horrors, and Porgy & Bess. Before she became an actress, dancer, and singer, Connie worked as a nurse, teacher, and waitress and is talented in event management.

In 2014, she appeared among the celebrity contestants in season one of I Love South Africa, an e.tv game show. She played the role of Mamokete in the e.tv soap opera Rhythm City (July 2007 – April 2016).
